Makueni Disburses Sh85 Million Bursary Cheques to 12,000 Students as Schools Reopen

More than 12,000 students in Makueni County are preparing to start school after the county administration distributed Sh85 million in bursary cheques. Beneficiaries include students from high schools, technical schools, colleges, and universities.

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior stated that the 12,900 students come from the county’s 30 wards. Full scholarships were given to three deserving students from each ward who scored 370 or higher.

“These students will join the other 600 students in the county, who study under county scholarship ,” he told those in attendance. Following the difficult economic conditions, Mutula advised principals to allow students who have not paid their school fees to remain in school.

Makueni Speaker Douglas Mbilu stated that it is past time for the government to invest in education in order to generate future leaders. “We don’t have a reason to invest so much in infrastructure such as roads, when the people who will use them are illiterate,” he added.

He asked the national government to invest in education infrastructure in arid and semi-arid regions. MCA Kilili Kalamba Francis Mutuku invited the public to attend public participation forums and contribute to the formulation of laws and policies.

Sofia Jane, a beneficiary and Wote Technical Training Institute student, expressed gratitude to the county for the effort. “You may think this is small but it means a lot to us because school dropouts get the chance to go back to school when they receive bursaries,” she told me.

Elizabeth Muli, an education executive, urged students to pursue their studies seriously in order to accomplish their goals. She recommended students in higher education institutions to search for side hustles to help them pay their way through school.

“Please look for pocket money to take care of other needs don’t be a nuisance to your parents,” Muli went on to say. She believes that Tvet institutions are excellent places to develop new talents.

“Jobs come looking for you if you have relevant skills and these institutions are good training grounds,” Muli went on to say.
