Koyonzo High Retains KSSSA National Rugby 7s Championship by Defeating Vihiga School

Koyonzo High School has won its second consecutive KSSSA National Rugby 7s championship by defeating Vihiga School by a score of 22-12 at Kakamega’s renowned Bull Ring.

To defend their championship, Koyonzo embarked on a voyage in which they did not lose a single match, securing their qualification for the East African Games for the second consecutive year.

Koyonzo’s Strong dominance


By constructing a commanding 15-7 lead at halftime, the Stormers asserted their dominance. Even though they completed the second half with only one successful conversion, the mission had already been accomplished.

Joseph Jibril scored two goals, while Brandon Mulefu and Kevin Otieno, who have demonstrated a remarkable scoring run throughout the tournament, each contributed a try.

Owen Kedera scored a try for the opposing team, while Victor Wawire scored a try and converted a successful conversion for Vihiga despite their loss.

St. Mary’s Yala punched its ticket to the East African Games with a decisive 40-5 victory over Kitondo in the third-place semifinals. This accomplishment positions them alongside Koyonzo and Vihiga on the list of traveling teams.

Bwake Boys earned the fifth-place position after defeating Bungoma High 24-7 in the fifth-place playoffs.

Koyonzo’s path to the final was secured with a 33-0 victory over Kitondo, the competition’s rising surprise.

The Stormers earned a spot in the final for the second consecutive year by scoring five tries and converting each of them with precision.

The two tries scored by Branton Mulefu highlighted his outstanding performance, while Maxwell Kipsang, Kevin Otieno, and Darrel Omondi each made their imprint with a single try. Eric Simiyu made four outstanding conversions during this successful match.

In the semifinals, Vihiga displayed their brilliance to the fullest by defeating Yala with a score of 36-7. By halftime, they had amassed a commanding 24-0 lead.

Roy Maruti scored two tries in the victory, while Owen Kedera, Belan Kiketi, and Brandon Lilumbi each scored one. Yala’s Albert Ochieng scores the consolation try.
