National Youth Service (NYS) Entry Grade; Qualifications for Enlistment
The National Youth Service (NYS) outlined the prerequisites for Kenyan youth aspiring to join the service on Wednesday, January 10. The move came in response to a surge in inquiries about the 2024 enlistment requirements for the paramilitary training force.
As part of the recruitment process, NYS disclosed that the exercise would take place in every sub-county across the 47 counties in Kenya. The specific date for recruitment would be publicly announced through both print and electronic media.

Qualifications & Criteria for 2024 NYS Recruitment
Prospective NYS recruits must be natural-born Kenyan citizens, as naturalized citizens are not eligible for enrollment. Additionally, candidates must fall within the age range of 18 to 24 years, aligning with NYS’s vision to be a hub for excellence in transforming, training, and empowering Kenyan youth.
In terms of academic qualifications, interested applicants need to have achieved a minimum grade of D (plain) or its equivalent in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education.
Candidates are required to be in good medical and physical condition, a determination made during the recruitment process. A clean criminal record is also imperative, with proof in the form of a certificate of good conduct issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Lastly, prospective candidates must fulfill any other qualifications that the Director General may stipulate from time to time.

Employment Opportunities Post-Training NYS assured aspiring recruits that the Service has devised an exit strategy to ensure all graduates secure employment upon completing the program. Among the opportunities highlighted in a statement from NYS are an 80% transition to other disciplined services and labor export to Europe.
In November 2023, President William Ruto directed that NYS trainees receive priority consideration during police and military recruitment.
