Members of the Kenyan parliament’s Departmental Committee on Social Protection met with officials from the National Youth Service (NYS) to discuss how the institution’s programs can be adjusted to include more candidates.

The committee proposed that the entry requirements be lowered from a D grade to D- or E in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam to enable more youths to join the service and acquire life skills.

However, the NYS Director General, Matilda Sakwa, expressed concern that candidates with lower grades may have difficulty fitting into courses like engineering and ICT, and may end up as drivers.

The NYS is planning to double the number of youth recruits from 20,000 to 40,000 per year, with the aim of eventually recruiting 100,000 youth every year from 2023, including more female recruits.

However, the NYS faces pending bills amounting to Ksh5.4 billion and has urged the committee to consider increasing its budget.

The Service is undertaking several projects, including planting three billion seedlings by recruiting 391 Kenyans from all constituencies, building dams and water pans in collaboration with the Ministry of Water, constructing affordable housing with the Ministry of Housing, and developing a talent center for sportsmen and sportswomen with the Ministry of Sports.

President William Ruto has promised to double the number of NYS recruits from 2023. During the NYS 86th passing out parade in Gilgil, Ruto explained that the active contribution of an overwhelming majority of youth is a foundational principle for development.

In conclusion, the Kenyan parliament is proposing to lower the entry requirements for the NYS to include more candidates, and the NYS plans to double its recruitment of youth from 20,000 to 40,000 per year, with a goal of eventually recruiting 100,000 youth per year.

The NYS is also working on several projects, including planting seedlings, building dams and water pans, constructing affordable housing, and developing a talent center for sportsmen and sportswomen.
