KRA Introduces Changes to Tax Invoice Management

On February 27, 2023, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced an upgrade of the Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) as part of the launch of the system’s second phase.

The notice was signed by the Acting Commissioner General. The new platform is designed to enable business owners to file returns more efficiently using several devices.

The notice revealed that the upgraded eTIMS will provide additional ways of transmitting electronic invoices to KRA on a real-time basis. This feature will involve the rolling out of the software version of the system.

This means that taxpayers will be able to file their returns in real-time, which will make the process much faster and more efficient. The new system will be available in three channels, which include an online portal, a mobile application, and an application at no extra cost.

The online portal will facilitate the real-time filing of invoices, while the mobile application will run on mobile phones and provide another avenue for issuing tax invoices.

The application will enable users to facilitate integration with businesses that prefer to continue using their existing billing systems. With the new eTIMS, taxpayers will be able to manage their tax invoices more easily and streamline the process of managing them.

The taxman expressed confidence that the new adjustments would improve the experience of taxpayers in managing their tax invoices.

Additionally, KRA invited Kenyans to give feedback on the new system by contacting the authority on the phone and via email. This feedback will help KRA identify areas where improvements can be made and where additional features may be needed.

In December 2022, KRA added a new section to its platform that enabled Kenyans to claim refunds for tax remittances made by mistake.

The refund section is accessible through the iTax portal, where applicants can make a claim by clicking on the ‘Refund’ tab on the menu and proceeding to the ‘Refund on Tax Paid in Error’ section.

Applicants are required to fill out a form and upload a document providing requisite evidence while indicating the period in which the taxes were paid by mistake.

Overall, the upgrade of the Tax Invoice Management System is a significant improvement in KRA’s service delivery. The new system will make the process of filing returns much easier and efficient.

Additionally, the introduction of the refund section will help taxpayers claim refunds for any tax remittances made by mistake. KRA’s commitment to enhancing its service delivery will undoubtedly help improve the taxpayer’s experience in managing their tax obligations.
