Kenya and Ireland Partner to Empower Young Scientists
The Education Cabinet Secretary of Kenya, Mr. Ezekiel Machogu, has praised the Republic of Ireland for its support of young Kenyans interested in science and technology education through the Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) initiative.
YSK, a joint venture between the Kenyan Ministry of Education and the Irish Government, offers a unique platform for young people to showcase their scientific talents and demonstrate their innovation.
During a courtesy call by the Irish Ambassador to Kenya, Ms. Fionnuala Quinlan, Machogu expressed his belief that learners possess enormous talent and potential, and YSK could play a critical role in their development, benefitting both the students and the country as a whole.
Ambassador Quinlan noted that Ireland has made substantial investments in education, with a particular emphasis on supporting its youth through initiatives such as the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition and the Irish Annual School Students’ Science Competition.
Quinlan explained that the Young Scientist Exhibition encourages young people to view science as exciting rather than scary.
YSK provides secondary school students with a platform to compete and showcase practical solutions to problems within their communities, with the winners being invited to take part in the Irish annual school students’ science competition in Dublin, Ireland.
Other senior Ministry officials, including the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang, and the Director in Charge of Administration in the State Department of Technical and Vocational Education, Ms. Joyce Mwale, were also present during the meeting.
Dr. Kipsang pledged that the Ministry would follow up with the winners to see how they are faring, with the aim of fostering a lifelong interest in science as a discipline and tool for problem-solving in society.
