13 TVET Colleges Elevated to National Polytechnic
13 Technical and Vocational Colleges have been elevated to National Polytechnic status in an effort to expand access to higher education.
Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting at the Kakamega State Lodge, presided over by President William Ruto, led to the adoption of this resolution.
Cabinet’s action is in accordance with the principles outlined in Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2005: A Framework for Education, Training, and Research, which establishes a pathway for the upward mobility of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates, according to a dispatch issued following the meeting.
In an initial stride towards realizing this collective national objective, the following educational institutions have been granted an elevation in status to that of National Polytechnics, as indicated in the communication.
- Maasai Technical Training Institute,
- Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology,
- Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology,
- Coast Institute of Technology,
- Tseikuru Technical and Training College, and
- Sang’alo Institute of Science and Technology
Others institutions that have been elevated include;
- Bureti Technical Vocational College,
- Jeremiah Nyagah Technical Training Institute,
- Mawego Technical Training Institute,
- Baringo Technical Training Institute.
According to an official cabinet communication, the decision taken by the Cabinet aligns with the guidelines outlined in Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2005 titled “A Framework for Education, Training, and Research.”
This framework serves as the foundation for facilitating the advancement of graduates from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, ensuring their upward mobility in the education sector.
The communication also highlights that the policy framework mandates the establishment of at least one National Polytechnic in each county, as well as a dedicated TVET institution in every constituency.
This comes as President William Ruto allocates Sh100 million to the under-construction Ebunangwe Technical Training Institute.
While visiting Ebunangwe in Emuhaya Sub-county, the head of state stated that this institution will be one of three in the country that will help train TTI tutors.
“I was here a while ago to commission this TTI, and I’m here today to check on its progress; I’m allocating Sh100 million to ensure that the institution is completed on time,” said President Ruto.
“Only three TTIs in the country will train our teachers for other TTIs across the country,” he continued.
He stated that the area’s representative has been working to ensure that the Institution is fully operational to serve all Kenyans.
