Government to Enact PWPER Recommendations on Subject-Based School Categorization
In accordance with the recommendations of the Presidential Working Group on Education Reforms (PWPER), schools will now be categorized according to the subjects they offer.
The recommended changes include the abolition of secondary education categorization and the elimination of mandatory subjects for career choices.
Dr. Belio Kipsang, Permanent Secretary for Basic Education, stated that reforms in the education sector will ensure that all schools in the country receive the necessary resources to enhance access to education for all.
The Working Group recommended that the traditional categorization of secondary schools into National, extra-county, County, and Sub-County schools be phased out with the 8-4-4 system; instead, under the CBC system, secondary schools will be categorized based on the career trajectories of learners.
Under the changes aligned with the transition to CBC at the secondary school level, the party proposes that students have options for subjects that will determine their future careers.
Learners will be required to choose combinations such as English or Kiswahili, Math or Science, and any other five subjects at the O-level; this will be accompanied by a reduction in the number of subjects at the Junior Secondary School level.
The PS, who was speaking in Thika during a fundraiser at Chania High School to enhance the School’s infrastructure, stated that the PWPER report is already being implemented, as His Excellency the President Dr. William Ruto issued a charter to the first Open University of Kenya last week.
He noted that the President made a commitment to Kenyans to stabilize the education sector and invest in the future of our children, where 56,000 teachers were hired within 8 months, Ksh. 628 billion was allocated, 18 million textbooks were given to the Junior Secondary School, and Ksh. 5 billion was allocated for the school nutrition program.
MPs Hon. Ndindi Nyoro and Hon. Alice Nganga were present, along with other education stakeholders, when President Ruto presented the PS with a donation of 10 million Kenyan shillings to close the infrastructure gap.
