Form 3 School Girl Dies by suicide in Lamu
On Monday, a Form 3 student committed suicide in the Kizuke neighborhood of Mpeketoni.
A few meters from her residence, the body of a 19-year-old girl was discovered hanging from a tree while still wearing her complete school uniform.
The incident has been confirmed by Lamu West deputy county commissioner Gabriel Kioni, who stated that the motive for the girl’s actions has yet to be determined.
However, he stated that investigations are proceeding while the body is in the morgue of the Mpeketoni Subcounty Hospital.
Suicide is never the answer, according to Kioni, who advised residents to seek assistance from hospitals, religious and community leaders if they are experiencing severe mental issues.
In recent years, the number of suicides in Mpeketoni has increased, prompting a government official to urge residents to learn to speak up when confronted with problems.
It is concerning that these cases are on the rise, particularly in Mpeketoni. Let’s learn to speak up whenever we’re going through something difficult, because I believe things can improve when you express yourself. “Suicide never truly resolves anything,” said Kioni.
Kimani Wanyoike, a leader of the Mpeketoni community, appealed to the government and the private sector for assistance in addressing depression and other mental health issues in the region.
He stated that the number of young people and men committing suicide in Mpeketoni has increased and that an immediate solution is required.
People are committing suicide at the slightest provocation, as if an evil entity has entered the area. People are depressed and unable to cope on their own, which is why we are urging the government and other parties to intervene and provide assistance,“ Wanyoike said.
