Govt Establishing a Qualifications Database to Eliminate Fake Certificates
In order to combat the pervasive problem of fake credentials, the government has initiated plans to create a comprehensive qualifications database.
Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Dr. Esther Muoria asserts that a comprehensive database will ensure that only individuals with verifiable evidence of their competence and merit are granted opportunities.
This step, according to the PS, represents a collective commitment to promptly and decisively eliminate the negative impact of fraudulent certificates for good.
She warns that neglecting the establishment of impartial criteria and fostering expertise could unintentionally pave the way for the ultimate downfall of our nation.
In light of this, she expresses gratitude towards committed individuals who steadfastly strive to maintain the credibility of our educational and certification frameworks.
Expressing her views at the review meeting for the Kenyan National Qualifications Council (KNQA) Strategic Plan, she underscored the need for meticulous consideration.
According to the Permanent Secretary, the KNQA’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan should be designed to effectively address both current and future academic and qualifications scenarios upon its implementation.
Muoria states that the plan’s emphasis on lifelong learning, skill development, and mechanisms that assure quality and relevancy of credentials are key indicators that it is not only contemporary but also revolutionary.
She insists that the success of the nation on multiple fronts depends on the careful alignment of individual aspirations, organizational objectives, and societal requirements.
She adds, “By carefully assessing the current and future skills requirements, we can chart a course that optimizes opportunities that will ultimately drive sustainable growth and competitiveness.
This, according to her, necessitates extensive research, the forecasting of future industry requirements and trends, and an ongoing dialogue with stakeholders to identify emerging skill gaps and changing demands.
She challenged KNQA to refocus its strategies in order to fulfill its essential mission of ensuring that the nation has globally competitive and pertinent qualifications that will transform the individual, the society, and the nation.
The purpose of the KNQA meeting was to revisit its vision and mission in the education and training sectors as well as in the qualifications landscape
“We are currently at an age where flexibility, innovation, and execution matter much more than decades-old qualifications or work experiences. Soon we will remember with nostalgia the days when people carried laminated heaps of certificates to interviews,” she notes.
According to Dr. Esther Muoria, the market no longer focuses solely on degrees, but also on attitudes, interpersonal skills, and, to a large extent, soft skills.
