According to the research, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) should rationalize the number of learning areas and curriculum designs in basic education in terms of breadth and integration of subjects within learning areas, gaps, material overload, and overlaps.

The number of learning areas in lower primary (Grades 1–3) has been reduced from nine to seven.
The number of courses per week has been lowered from 35 to 31 (including the Program of Instruction).
