Daystar University First-Year Student Dies 4 Days After Enrollment

Bowen Kanda and his family are still in utter disbelief over the death of their daughter, Mercy Cherono, who passed away only four days after enrolling in a nursing program at Daystar University.

On the fateful day, Kanda says his daughter had contacted her mother and indicated she would be home that evening since there was a party for first-year students scheduled at the school that she did not want to attend.

Moments later, 18-year-old Cherono called her mother to inform her that she had decided to stay at the party because she was unable to locate transportation home.

At 2:00 a.m., Kanda reported receiving a phone call that every parent dreads; the school wanted the parents to hurry to the institution immediately, and later directed them to Shalom Hospital in Kitengela, where their worst fears were confirmed: their beloved daughter had passed away.

“I only admitted her to Daystar University on September 4, and only four days later, she was discovered dead,” Kanda explained.

“The hostel where she was discovered is not the hostel for which I paid. She died in a different hostel for which I had paid, and this hostel does not even have CCTV cameras that could have traced my child’s movements.”

On Thursday at the institution’s Nairobi campus, Daystar University conducted a requiem mass for the deceased student but declined to comment on her mysterious death.

After less than a week of admission, the family is now questioning the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s demise.

The deceased Cherono’s postmortem examination was inconclusive, leaving the family with more concerns than answers.

“The autopsy report is inconclusive; samples were taken, but the government chemist has yet to disclose them. The preliminary report specifies only that the child died of excessive bleeding due to a deep cut caused by a knife stabbing,” Kanda added.

On Saturday, September 15, the 18-year-old Nursing student whose life was cut short will be laid to rest at her parents’ home in Kapsait, Elgeyo Marakwet, even as leaders from North Rift County urge prompt investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.
