In an operation conducted on Thursday, officials from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended Dolal Mohamed Mohamud, the Managing Director of Garissa Water and Sewage Company, right in his office. The arrest was made on allegations of fabricating academic certificates.

The EACC officers executed a search at Mohamud’s office located in Garissa Town, leading to his subsequent detention at Garissa Police Station. Mohamud is set to face charges in court on Friday. The specific details regarding the forged academic certificates remain undisclosed.

This development represents a significant stride in the EACC’s ongoing efforts to unveil public servants possessing counterfeit academic credentials. At the start of the week, EACC Chairperson Bishop David Oginde declared that individuals discovered to have secured employment with fraudulent certificates would be required to reimburse their salaries.

Oginde emphasized the Commission’s commitment to recovering ill-gotten gains through legal means.

The intensified crackdown by the EACC aligns with revelations from a Public Service Commission report, which exposed over 500 civil servants serving in various capacities while holding fake degrees. The fake certificates span from Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) to University Degree levels.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, addressing recent criticisms concerning PSC employees, attributed the issues to a flawed recruitment process.

He highlighted a shortage of technical staff across the government, emphasizing a disproportionate ratio of support staff to technical staff due to recruitment that overlooked established staffing requirements.

In a related context, concerns have been raised about the potential blacklisting of Kenyan degrees by other countries. An earlier report by Kenyans.co.ke indicated that Nigeria was contemplating such a move due to an observed trend of Kenyan graduates deceiving the system.

Togo and Benin have already implemented blacklisting measures, affecting 45 higher learning institutions. This situation underscores the broader implications of academic fraud on an international scale, posing potential repercussions for Kenyan graduates seeking recognition abroad.
