The introduction of the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya led to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) unveiling a national assessment for grade 6 students.

Distinct from other KNEC-graded documents, the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) certificate takes the form of a performance report, exclusively available in softcopy. School heads can download this certificate through the KNEC portal at cba.knec.ac.ke.

The performance report includes key details such as the assessment center and number, as well as the pupil’s name and gender. The gender is indicated on the far right, with ‘F’ representing a girl and ‘M’ indicating a boy.

Unlike the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate, the performance report does not feature a passport photo of the candidate.

The subjects examined under KNEC for Grade Six pupils encompass English Language, Kiswahili Lugha, Mathematics, Integrated Science Creative Arts, and Social Studies.

Integrated Science comprises Science and Technology, Agriculture, Home Science, and Physical and Health Education. Meanwhile, Creative Arts and Social Studies encompass Social Studies, Art and Craft, Music, and Religious Education.

Grading is done on a scale of Performance Level 1 to 4 for all five subjects, with the highest number denoting exemplary performance. Performance Level 1, categorized as below expectation, is awarded when the learner attempts to demonstrate assessed knowledge, skills, and attitudes/values with assistance.

Performance Level 2, described as approaching expectation, is where the learner displays assessed attributes some of the time.

For Performance Level 3, meeting expectations, the grade six pupil can generally tackle given assessment tasks. Performance Level 4, the highest commendation, is described as exceeding expectations, with the learner consistently and accurately displaying assessed attributes.

To verify the certificate’s authenticity, besides the learner’s particulars, it must bear a school stamp and the head teacher’s signature, along with the download date. Additionally, the certificate must feature KNEC’s logo watermark.
