Benson Mbundi: Kenyan Student Who Won US Scholarship Then Fell Into Coma.
Benson Mbundi, a Kenyan student
who excelled in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Exams in 1999, had his dream of studying in the US cut short by a mysterious illness.
After winning a full scholarship to join a university in Texas, USA, Mbundi’s plans to travel were derailed by his failing health.
Mbundi had traveled to Bobasi Constituency in Kisii County to attend a relative’s funeral when he began to experience frequent headaches, weakness in his limbs, and loss of strength.
His parents took him to various hospitals in search of treatment, but his condition only worsened, and he eventually fell into a coma.
Paralyzed and Unable to Move
Doctors were unable to restore Mbundi’s strength, and he was left paralyzed, unable to move from his bed without assistance.
His family had to sell all their possessions to pay for his medical bills and keep his dream of studying abroad alive. However, it was not enough, and Mbundi’s opportunity to study in the US was lost forever.
Mbundi has been living with his illness since, and his condition has not improved. He is still unable to move without assistance and is confined to his bed, completely dependent on his family for his basic needs.
His mother has made a heartfelt appeal for well-wishers to support her son in buying a wheelchair and to help his children access education.
Mbundi’s story is a sad reminder of how quickly one’s life can change due to unexpected circumstances. Despite his excellent academic performance, Mbundi was unable to achieve his dreams due to factors beyond his control.
However, his story should also serve as an inspiration to others to cherish their health and to be grateful for the opportunities they have in life.
