The eulogy delivered by former Trade Cabinet Administration Secretary David Osiany provided insight into the life and values of the late Professor George Magoha, who was an accomplished academician and administrator.

On January 24, 2023, Osiany shared details that shed light on the Professor’s contributions as a researcher and medical inventor.

Professor Magoha, a prominent urologist, died at the age of 71.

He was married, to Dr. Barbara Odudu Magoha, a consulting obstetrician and gynecologist, and had a son, Dr. Michael Magoha, who is also a doctor.

Osiany claimed that Professor Magoha was credited with the discovery of a drug known as Sildenafil, which is sold under the brand name Viagra.

As a healthcare specialist in the field of urinary tract, Professor Magoha was responsible for the innovation of Sildenafil, a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

In his past research, Professor Magoha explained that the term “erectile dysfunction” is a more precise description of the clinical problem of an erection, as opposed to the traditional term “impotence.”

At the University of Nairobi, where Professor Magoha taught medicine and surgery, he conducted groundbreaking medical research that was accepted by Pfizer, a US pharmaceutical firm.

In collaboration with Pfizer, Professor Magoha became one of the key contributors to the development of an improved version of Viagra, which hit the market in the early 2000s.

As the former Dean of the Medical School at the University of Nairobi, Professor Magoha’s research was used as the foundation for the enhanced development and mass production of Sildenafil (Viagra) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Pfizer initially developed Viagra in 1989, but it was only used for the treatment of heart conditions.

However, Professor Magoha’s research expanded the drug’s medical use beyond its original function.

According to Pfizer, the primary indication of Sildenafil is now the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and its use is one of the standard treatments for the condition, including for men with diabetes mellitus.

In his 91-page Curriculum Vitae, Professor Magoha expressed his pride in the drug, which has likely saved many relationships, particularly marriages.

In 2020, Sildenafil was the 183rd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with two million prescriptions for Viagra, according to the U.S.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA also noted that Viagra is among the most active pharmaceutical ingredients in terms of Sildenafil citrate, produced in Pfizer’s Ringaskiddy complex in County Cork, which is Pfizer’s largest production facility outside of the United States.

On August 24, 2022, Professor Magoha announced his return to medical practice, and jokingly told journalists, “If you have issues with passing urine, pass by my clinic in Nairobi Hospital.”
