Ugenya High School: How Whole Class of 174 Got Minimum University Entry Grade. In the 2021 KCSE examination, every candidate at Ugenya High School, an 11-year-old institution in Siaya County, received the minimum university entry grade.Interestingly, several of Ugenya’s candidates spent a week last year at Kapsabet High School — the top school nationally in the 2021 exam, with only one C+ as the lowest grade – to observe how the guys at Kapsabet conduct their studies.Self-discipline and teamwork among the instructors and non-teaching staff were the secrets behind the good results, according to a visit to Ugenya High on Friday. The school is one of the few public secondary schools in the country to achieve a 100% pass rate. It received a mean grade of 9.05 from 174 candidates, with the lowest candidate receiving a C+, which is the minimum requirement for admission to university in Kenya. The school was recently promoted from sub-county rank to county status as a result of its excellent performance. The idea of a 100 percent transition was ingrained in the minds of the applicants as soon as they enrolled for the KCSE exams, according to Mr Clement Nyang’acha, the school’s chief principal.“The school provided T-shirts to all the candidates. They had writings ‘mean score 9.0 and 100 percent transition’. This went a long way toward assuring that the students owned the school’s goal. “Every time,” Mr Nyang’acha added, “we told them to believe in themselves and work toward the goal."Teachers collaborated to ensure that syllabi were finished on time, allowing students enough time to review previous exams. The school was very successful in sending candidates on exchange programs to various schools.“We managed to visit Maranda High School and Kapsabet Boys and we learnt for one week what they were doing differently that made them excel. Teachers also went for exchange programmes and we got lessons that helped us bridge the gap between us and them,” said the chief principal.Ugenya High School 2020, 2021 KCSE ResultsEducation specialists and motivational speakers also contributed to the school’s success since its inception in 2011.Teachers ensured that students received notes and assessments via phones while they were absent of school during the pandemic, and learning continued digitally.“Teachers would send notes to the students through phones and learning went on. When the schools reopened, things went on well and we discovered that most of the students had covered syllabi on their own,” noted Mr Nyang’acha. However, there were a few extreme examples of indiscipline among the students, which the school administration had to deal with in order to keep things running smoothly.“We discovered that some students were into drugs, especially bhang, and we engaged the security organs and the parents to discipline them. There was a time some attempted to torch the school facilities. Some were discontinued,” he added. With so many students, the school is currently overburdened. The management is debating how to ensure that the pupils are accommodated.Because their classrooms are full, they’re transforming school bus shade into a classroom.ALSO READ:"We have to accommodate all the learners because we cannot send them away,” said Mr Nyang’acha. This year, the school was recognized as the best performing school in Siaya County in the category of county schools.Mr Nyanga’cha stated that the students succeed in sports in addition to academics.Ugenya High School: How Whole Class of 174 Got Minimum University Entry Grade.
