Following the declaration by President William Ruto to establish an education reform task force to assess the Competence Base Curriculum (CBC), stakeholders have criticized the previous administration’s management of the new curriculum.

Wilson Sossion, the former secretary general of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), claimed that parents and other important stakeholders were not consulted in the decision-making process before ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta’s curriculum change.

In addition, he challenged the current system by stating that the curriculum provided in classrooms was fake.

“We are cheating ourselves as a country because there has never been CBC in our classes, teachers are teaching an outcome-based curriculum.”

When parents and children do not accept a curriculum are not excited about it, it’s a wrong curriculum,“ the former KNUT SG noted.

Friday, September 16, Sossion stated on Citizen Television that former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration neglected to hire professionals during the pilot phase.

"We will not have it wrong if we allow professionals to do their work. The task force will identify the issues and provide solutions,” he added.

Professor Laban Ayiro, a former task group member, criticized the previous government for failing to provide clear measures for the transition of Grade 6 students to Junior Secondary School.

“We should pick a blended model, let’s not be too ambitious. Our economy can not support that,” Ayiro stated.

With the new leadership, the two were optimistic that the country’s educational system would be inclusive.

“We have an opportunity to reexamine our education system, not CBC, in order to align it with our national development strategy and vision 2030,” Sossion added.

Didmus Barasa, a representative for the constituency of Kimilili, indicated on Thursday, September 15, that parents would urge the abolition of the system through the created task group.

“We have agreed with the president William Ruto, he also does not like the CBC. But since he is the president, he has set up a task force to give their views,” Barasa stated.
