The Taita Taveta County Government has recently offered comprehensive financial support to 100 academically gifted but economically challenged students.

This support package, worth Kshs. 15 million, will enable the students to continue their secondary school education for the next four years.

The students will receive full support for their school fees, uniforms, and stationery for their first year of secondary school.

During the scholarship award ceremony held at the County Headquarters in Mwatate, Governor Andrew Mwadime stated that the beneficiaries were chosen through a rigorous vetting process.

The focus was on marginalized groups, orphans, single-parent households, and families with disabilities. The governor encouraged the students to work hard in school and make the most of this opportunity to secure their future.

Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo also challenged the students to avoid negative habits and behaviors that could interfere with their studies. Deputy Speaker Anselm Mwadime warned that students who performed poorly would risk losing their scholarships.

This was a golden opportunity to excel academically and students needed to take it seriously.

The Health CECM Gifton Mkaya, speaking on behalf of the Education CECM Gloria Monikombo, emphasized the importance of the scholarships in creating a level playing field for bright students from underprivileged families.

Enock Mwanzia, a student from a less fortunate family, was overjoyed as he received his scholarship from the governor. Mwanzia, who scored 361 marks in the 2022 KCPE exams, came from a poor family and saw his performance as his only hope to attend secondary school.

The County Education Fund Board Chair David Mombo challenged the beneficiaries to work hard and attain university entry points after completing their secondary education.

The Fund Board Ag. CEO Lawrence Mwakio also appealed to school heads to retain the sponsored students, even if there were delays in funding from the government.

Overall, this support package is a great step in ensuring that academically talented students from less fortunate families have equal access to education.

The government’s commitment to providing a bright future for these students is commendable, and it is now up to the students to take advantage of this opportunity and make the most of their secondary school education.
