The learning environment at St. Benedict Arror Secondary School in Elgeyo Marakwet was disrupted on Sunday evening when gunshots were fired a few meters from the compound just as students were eating their lunch.

Gunshots were heard about 200m from the school compound, according to the school principal, Lucy Okumu, who recorded the incident.
In fear for their lives, the students sought refuge beneath dining tables. Villagers also moved their livestock to the school compound, which they claimed was safer.
Students from nearby schools also flocked to the school’s compound to seek refuge from the gunshots, which lasted about 20-30 minutes.

The school principal told K24 Digital over the phone that the students are still struggling to cope with the traumatic event.
One person was shot dead near Tort Sub-county Hospital on Saturday by suspected cattle raiders. So far, 62 people have been killed by bandits, according to deputy governor Elgeyo Marakwet Wesley Korir, who claims that this is not normal banditry.
