Schools In Troubled Lamu Reopening Following Government Order
After the national government deployed a multi-agency security team to restore normalcy in the area, the government has ordered the immediate reopening of all schools in the Lamu West sub-county.
Mr John Elungata, the Coast regional commissioner, said learning should resume tomorrow (Tuesday) in schools that were closed after students and their parents fled to neighbouring Mpeketoni and Kibaoni.
Juhudi Primary School, Salama Primary School, Holy Angle Primary School, Majembeni Primary and Secondary School, and Muhamarani Primary School were all closed down in Lamu West sub-county.
Early this month, militants carried out a series of attacks in the region, killing 14 people, including four police officers.
Property worth millions of shillings was also destroyed after some houses in the Widho area were set on fire.
Tensions were high in the villages of Juhudi, Widho, Mashagoni, Majembeni, and Kamukunji in the Majembeni location, and Bobo in the Hindi location, forcing some villagers to seek refuge in nearby schools.
Mr Elungata, accompanied by Coast Regional Police Commander Mr Manase Musyoka, held a security meeting yesterday at the Kibaoni police station grounds in Lamu West sub-county and ordered the immediate resumption of learning.
They instructed the national police reserve to stand guard in affected areas to ensure increased safety.
