Senator Khalwale’s Asks Mukumu Girl’s Parents Not to Send Children Back to School
Kakamega Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale has issued a warning to parents regarding sending their children back to Mukumu Girls High School after a recent food poisoning outbreak that occurred in late March.
The incident resulted in the closure of the school on April 3, as three students lost their lives and several others were hospitalized.
In a statement to the media on Thursday, Khalwale, who also serves as the Senate Majority Whip, expressed his disappointment after visiting the school on Wednesday.
He stated that he was not convinced that the institution had taken sufficient measures to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future, as the school was scheduled to reopen on May 2.
Khalwale reported that the storage facilities for food at the school were still filled with bad and rotten foodstuff, despite the directive to destroy them, particularly those that were laced with poisonous preservatives, before the students’ return.
He further highlighted that the school still relied on water from a nearby river for student use, which was not treated to remove contaminants and hazardous substances.
In addition, Khalwale pointed out that those responsible for the poor state of affairs at the school, whether directly or indirectly, were still in their positions.
He accused the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of failing to take action against the School Principal, BOM, and other officers who were responsible for the dangerous situation at Mukumu Girls due to negligence, greed, or incompetence.
As a result, Khalwale advised parents not to send their children back to school on May 2 unless the three concerns he raised were addressed.
He emphasized that the situation on the ground had not improved, and it was crucial for the necessary changes to be made before students could safely return to the institution.
Dr. Boni Khalwale urged parents to be cautious about sending their children back to Mukumu Girls High School due to the food poisoning outbreak and other concerns that remained unaddressed.
He called on the school and relevant authorities to take swift action to rectify the situation and ensure the safety and well-being of the students before resuming normal operations.
