Raphael Munavu has been chosen by President William Ruto to lead the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) task team.

Other members include university presidents such as University ‘of Nairobi (UoN) Vice-Chancellor Gitahi Kiama, Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina, and award-winning teacher Peter Tabichi.

Munavu, a professor at UoN, possesses extensive expertise in Organic, Environmental, and Industrial Chemistry.

His career spans 46 years, beginning in 1976 when he began teaching at UoN.

“A professor with a demonstrated history of working in the university sector at deputy and vice-chancellor levels. Skilled in lecturing, academic writing, science, education, governance, and university teaching,” Munavu described himself.

The former vice chancellor of Moi University has authored over sixty refereed and commissioned works. In addition, he has served as a Chemistry external examiner at overseas universities such as the University of Malawi, the University of Zimbabwe, and the University of Dar es Salaam.

Notably, his research focuses on discovering and developing new chemical processes to turn locally available materials into valuable products.

Munavu was also the vice-chancellor of administration and finance at Egerton University and the University of Nairobi.

The professor earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from 1967 to 1970 at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, United States.

He earned a master’s degree in 1970 from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and a doctorate from the University of Detroit between 1972 and 1975.

Munavu also serves as the president of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) and the South Eastern University College council (SEUCO).

“Over six years of experience in national governance focused on resource allocations and principles of devolution,” he added.

Kizito Wangalwa, Augusta Mwihaki Muthigani, Peter Barasa, Ahmed Yussuf, Jone Mose, Hassan Mwakimako, Lynette Mwende Ndile, Wilson Kogo, and Stephen Mbugua Ngari also serve on the committee.
