Parents of 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates who have not reported to secondary school face arrest and prosecution starting next week for denying their children the right to an education.

The parents of 1800 candidates will be taken to court starting next week if they do not send their children to school.

“From next week, a parent who has not sent a child to school, we will take the parents to court and it is the parent’s right to educate the child. The chiefs must be able to account for every child who sat for KCPE last year, “Tana River County Commissioner Thomas Sankei said.

Tana River County Director of Education Khalif Hassan bemoaned the low rate of transition from primary to secondary school.

“In Tana River, the last census of 2019, there were 56,000 children out of school. In every village you will find children playing’’,  said the Director, adding that the situation is similar on the roads, where children are tasked with herding livestock while they are supposed to be in school.

The County Director of Education revealed at a peace conference that 1800 of the 5900 KCPE candidates who sat for KCPE in 2021 have not yet reported to secondary school.
