No Junior Secondary Fees, Machogu Declares
On Monday, January 16th, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that students enrolling in junior secondary schools will not be charged tuition.
According to the CS, President William has instructed the Treasury to set out Ksh15,000 per learner per capitation to facilitate free education in all Junior Secondary Schools.
He disclosed that the government would pay Ksh 9,6 billion to fund the program’s continuation.
Machogu disclosed that President William Ruto’s government set Ksh9.6 billion in capitation, or Ksh15,000 for each student entering Grade 7 in public schools.
“This means that no school should charge any fees for any learners have boarding wings,” Machogu declared.
The CS additionally asked KNEC to engage with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) to provide learners and parents with an interpretation of the report.
In addition, KNEC was instructed to collaborate with the TSC and KICD to submit a report to the government on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“I order the Council to hold discussions with TSC and KICD on the national KPSEA report with a view of providing feedback on CBC that can reform ongoing curriculum reviews,” he reiterated.
