The Kenyan government seeks to implement its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.

The govt seeks to launch the National Social Health Insurance Fund (NSHIF) by July 1st.

The Health Cabinet Secretary, Susan Nakhumicha, announced this development during the opening of the two-day National Cancer Summit held in Nairobi.

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will be known as NSHIF.

The govt seeks to ensure that all Kenyans have access to improved healthcare.

The UHC program has recognized cancer as a priority area, with the goal of providing patients with better access to care services, while reducing financial burden.

To achieve this, Nakhumicha has been working closely with the county governments, leading to the enhancement of cancer screening programs.

The Health Cabinet Secretary has called for noble partners and well-wishers to join forces with her ministry in rolling out the UHC.

The Cancer Summit provides a valuable platform for Africans to come together and redesign cancer interventions.

This event is part of the build-up activities towards the global commemoration of World Cancer Day, held annually in February.

Cancer is a major public health concern in Kenya, being the third leading cause of death in the country. In 2020, new cases were 42,000 with 27,000 resulting in death.

Governor Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o of Kisumu county also spoke at the summit, emphasizing the importance of joint efforts in addressing this issue.

Kenya will celebrate World Cancer Day in Garissa County this Saturday, Feb 4th.
