Makerere Best in East Africa. Top 100 Universities Globally – Webometrics Ranking
In the 2023 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, Makerere University in Uganda outshined renowned institutions in Kenya, including the University of Nairobi to become the Best in East Africa.
The university was ranked at position 13, while the University of Nairobi followed at position 14 in Africa.
The ranking evaluated 11,993 universities globally based on their excellence, openness, and impact.
The main objective of the list was to promote academic web presence and support the Open Access initiatives for increasing the significant transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge generated by the universities to society.
South Africa and Egypt dominated the top 12 positions in the ranking, with Makerere University at position 13.
Other Kenyan universities in the top 100 included Kenyatta University at 54th, Egerton University at 73rd, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology at 78th, and Moi University at 79th.
In terms of the global ranking, the University of Nairobi was at 1064th, Kenyatta University at 2047th, Egerton University at 2334th, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology at 2470th, and Moi University at 2470th.
The University of Cape Town in South Africa was ranked first in the list, while the United Kingdom and the United States dominated the top ten universities globally with the University of Toronto in Canada emerging at position 16.
The research was conducted by Consejo Superior De Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain.
The ranking started in 2004 with the aim of offering full coverage of Higher Education institutions in any country or discipline involved.
