Irungu Kang’ata, governor of Murang’a, honoured his county’s top students with a free trip to parliament.
Om Monday, January 16th, after their trip, he mentioned that it was a method to motivate them and congratulate them for being top performers.
Kang’ata noted that the trip to parliament and time spent with Members of Parliament (MPs) will inspire students as they enter secondary schools.
Each outstanding student from a public school in Murang’a was fortunate enough to join the tour with one of his or her parents.
Additionally, he selected a teacher from each school to accompany the students to Nairobi. While reviewing recent events, Kang’ata remarked that his government was focusing on a number of sectors that would create employment opportunities for brilliant students.
“We brought them here to the parliament so that they be inspired as a way of improving education in Murang’a county as other students will also be motivated through this,” he added.
Senator Joe Nyutu of the county of Murang’a praised the students for earning a trip to Parliament through their performance.
Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Veronica Maina praised Kang’ata and Nyutu for their initiative.
“We have accepted them and we are happy with the governor and the senator for that. It is a good move to see that our kids are getting a chance to be motivated.
They will see that we are there to hold their hands, and when possibilities emerge, children from the county of Murang’a will be in the forefront,” Maina said.
This comes just one day after the government announced that students in Form One will begin attending their new secondary schools on February 6.
During the Form One selection process at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, the cabinet secretary for education, Ezekiel Machogu, stated that the process was conducted fairly, based on choice, merit, and space availability.
