Mukumu Girls High School to Reopen on 2nd May in Phases
The Mukumu Girls High School in Kenya, which was closed in March after a series of alleged food poisoning incidents, is set to reopen on May 2nd but in phases, according to a committee formed to oversee its implementation of improved sanitation recommendations.
The committee, chaired by Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia, proposes that Form Fours, the oldest students, will open first and undergo mandatory testing by a team of doctors, counselling, and monitoring of their health status. After a day, Form Threes will reopen and undergo the same process.
The process will be repeated for Form Twos and Form Ones. Before the reopening, parents will be invited to the school on April 29th to inspect the school’s infrastructure, assess the safety measures, and receive counselling from seasoned psychologists.
The Regional Commissioner also reported that the school was undergoing restructuring, with a borehole being constructed, water being treated, and asbestos roofing being replaced with modern iron sheets.
The committee is monitoring the health status of all students through contact with their parents, asking those who feel sick to go to the hospital for treatment.
The Committee also comprises representatives from the County Public Health, Medical Doctor, Parents Association, Teachers Union Officials, Kenya National Environment Management Authority, Lake Victoria North Water Services Agency, Water Resource Authority, Teachers Service Commission, Auditors, Regional Procurement Officer, Regional CID Commander, Regional County Police Commander, Regional Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit Commander, Catholic Church representative, County Education Board Representative, and other officers.
The Regional Commissioner urged parents and politicians to support the school and make recommendations on what they want done to guarantee the safety of children. The committee aims to ensure that the school is a safe environment for children to learn and grow.
