Ministry of Education Ramping Up for Grade 10 Enrollment in 2026: Preparations in Full Swing

The Ministry of Education plans to enrol the first cohort of Grade 10 learners in senior school for three years under the competency-based curriculum in 2026.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, during his appearance before Senators on Wednesday, assured that the state is prepared to smoothly enrol Grade 10 learners as it phases out 8-4-4 from secondary schools.

Machogu stated that all necessary preparations for senior school, commencing in January 2026, are in progress.

HRMIS TEACHERS LEAVE MODULE GUIDE

He mentioned that the ministry has assessed infrastructural development needs such as classrooms and laboratories, ensuring adequacy for the anticipated first cohort of Grade 10 learners.

Machogu also noted the ministry’s efforts in teacher recruitment since 2022, with 56,750 teachers recruited across various levels.

To ensure teachers are adequately equipped for the CBC, Machogu informed the Senators about ongoing efforts to retool tutors. He also emphasized the curriculum development efforts of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) for Grade 10 learners.

Senate Committee on Education Chairperson Joseph Nyutu inquired about the pathways offered in senior high school and whether each school would provide all three pathways or specialise in specific career paths.

Machogu confirmed the existence of three pathways: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), social sciences (humanities), and performing arts, music, and athletics. He emphasised that the purpose of these pathways is to enable specialisation and talent nurturing.

Machogu addressed concerns regarding the provision of pathways, stating that the ministry is formulating a plan.

He mentioned the preparation of a sessional paper on the matter, which parliament will deliberate to determine the way forward. Machogu refrained from preempting the debate, stating that the sessional paper’s discussion in parliament will provide clarity on the matter.
