Magoha Pursuits Politicians Possessing Fake Degrees
George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, has stamped his authority in the pursuit of politicians who have falsified their academic credentials and are seeking elective positions ahead of the 2022 General Election.
Magoha wrote to Attorney General Kihara Kariuki, pleading with him to intervene and guide his ministry in protecting the Kenya National Qualification Authority’s role (KNQA).
This comes after a parliamentary committee ruled last week that KNQA’s role in verifying academic papers was illegal.
Magoha urged the AG to guide the ministry in amending the regulations in order to avoid sub-sectors in Education from conflicting with the disputed roles by KNQA in an attempt to prevent Parliament from limiting the powers.
Court battles have erupted over KNQA’s role in academic paper verification, following a petitioner’s claim that the Authority lacked the authority to approve national and foreign certificates.
He contended that the task has been delegated to the Technical and Vocational Training Authority (TVETA).

Furthermore, the National Assembly’s Public Investments Committee (PIC) backed the petition in Parliament last week, stating that KNQA had not been authorized to vet and approve academic certificates.
In recent years, KNQA has been at the forefront of combating fraudulent academic papers. In February 2021, the Authority issued a report revealing that one in every three Kenyans possessed fake academic papers.
Dr. Juma Mukhwana, Director-General of the KNQA, highlighted the troubling statistics, warning that the situation could worsen as the country approaches the next General Election.
Several politicians have been accused of having falsified academic papers. Taita Governor Granton Samboja, Wiper Party’s Agnes Kavindu, former Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi, and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, among others, have been at the centre of these allegations.
