Teachers concerned about new CBA for Grades 3, 4, and 5 students.
Teachers have expressed concerns about the new Competency-Based Assessments (CBA) for students in Grades 3, 4, and 5, which began on Monday, August 31.
These assessments, which are the brainchild of the new 2-6-3-3-3 Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), do not include multiple-choice questions. Tutors complained that the assessments only favored students who could read, understand, and write.
Some have termed the exam as challenging in comparison to the 8-4-4 system adding that it only benefits students who can read and understand.
A teacher at the Sharp Angels Learning Centre in Kayole says one cannot guess in this system, unlike the 8-4-4 system, because there are no multiple choices.
The assessment consists of written questions that require students to apply what they have learned in class. Another teacher observes that the questions implore the student to think through the issue and provide a solution.
The assessments are not direct questions, but rather application. The teacher at Tassia School in Embakasi explains that the learner should be able to read and understand the question before providing a solution.
8-4-4 Multiple-Choice Questions Elimination Among Changes In CBC’s Assessment For Grade 3, 4, and 5.
At the end of the assessments, teachers must download the assessments from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) portal and upload the students’ responses to the portal.
The assessments at the end of Grades 3, 4, and 5 are worth 20 points each, for a total of 60 points at the end of Grade 5.
Grade Six, the final year of primary school, will then be graded out of 40 points, for a total of 100 points in primary school.
This means that assessments in each grade count toward a student’s final grade, as opposed to the 8-4-4 system, in which students were graded only after class 8.
The assessments conclude on Friday, February 4, and the Grade 6 KCPE exams begin in March 2022.
