Magoha Defends Kisumu Boys And Girls Schools, Says No Relocation.George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, has rejected calls to relocate Kisumu Boys High School and Kisumu Girls High School.Speaking in Kisumu County on Saturday, May 7, Magoha stated that the schools will not be relocated despite Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s recommendations. The CS assured school students, parents, and teachers that the government will not relocate them from the city center, as suggested by the governor.Governor Nyong’o proposed relocating Kisumu Boys and Kisumu Girls schools away from the busy city center, claiming that the schools add no economic value despite being located on prime land.He defended his plans to relocate the two national schools from the CBD, claiming that their current location did not align with the city’s goal of becoming a commercial hub.According to the governor, the two schools are located on prime land within Kisumu CBD without detracting from his plan to turn Kisumu into a profit-making entity.“Considering the value of the place, that land needs to be useful. We need to construct an integrated urban centre rather than schools,” Nyong’o explained. To avoid wasting government land, the governor proposed relocating the two schools to the city’s outskirts and sharing facilities.“Each school has a field, a swimming pool and other amenities that have occupied chunks of land. Why don’t we take them to an area where schools share amenities? We don’t need to have a field for each school in a town,“ he explained.Governor Nyong’o also wants to relocate the Manyatta Arabs School, Kisumu County Referral Hospital, Jua Kali market, and the city’s main bus terminal, which is currently located across the street from Kisumu Boys.He has advocated for the best use of county land and oversaw the construction of a stadium and convention center at the Kisumu Agricultural Showground.Kisumu Boys and Girls High Schools are located in Kisumu’s Central Business District, directly across from the main bus terminal. Despite sharing a fence, the main entrances are a kilometer apart and on different roads.ALSO READ:Locals and alumni have previously expressed opposition to the schools’ imminent relocation.
