Machogu Issues JSS Fee Guidelines
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has asked the field education officials to guarantee a 100% transition of learners from grade six last year to grade seven.
Machogu asked the officials to furnish his office with names of schools charging illegal levies on parents stating that secondary schools should not charge fees beyond the ones stipulated by the Ministry of Education.
On fees payment in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), Machogu stated that there should be no payment of fees of any kind by parents, and the government allocation of Kshs 15,000 would meet all JSS requirements. The learners should use the desks they would have used in class seven in grade seven.
In attendance was the PS State Department for Basic Education, Belio Kipsang. He noted that County Directors of Education would now register schools, and he asked the officers to exercise responsibility with integrity and ensure the learning environment is conducive for children.
The CS’s directive comes after the National Assembly Committee on Education convened an urgent meeting to iron out sticky issues surrounding the JSS transition. Machogu also assured all public schools that the government had hired enough teachers who are in the process of reporting to their respective schools.
The Education Cabinet Secretary has urged stakeholders to ensure that they follow the government’s directive on education policy. The government is keen on implementing the Competence-Based Curriculum, and it would be unfair to learners if they were tested on a different curriculum.
Additionally, the government has allocated Kshs 15,000 for Junior Secondary Schools, and parents should not pay any fees. The government has also assured that it has hired enough teachers to address the teacher shortage issue in public schools.
These directives will ensure that all students have access to education regardless of their economic background.
