Ministry Asks Senators To Intervene in ECDE Teachers Pay Cut
The Education Principal Secretary, Belio Kipsang’, has urged Senators to intervene in the proposed pay cut for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.
During a meeting with the Committee on Education, Kipsang’ requested that Senators defend the educators from a planned decrease in their salary.
He stated that the ECDE teachers play a critical role in building the foundation for education and therefore deserve proper remuneration.
The PS highlighted that the majority of the work of preparing and shaping students for the education journey is carried out by ECDE teachers.
He urged the country to invest in quality education at the entry-level by ensuring that the interests of ECDE instructors are taken into account.
Kipsang’ emphasized the need for the national and county governments to work together to harmonize a single scheme of service for ECDE teachers across all 47 counties.
By doing so, he argued that there would be no salary disparities among the ECDE teachers, with some on permanent terms of service while others on a contract basis.
Kipsang’ cited a study conducted on basic education, indicating that investing in quality ECDE reduces the cost of primary education by 15%.
Reports emerged that the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) had planned to reduce the minimum pay for ECDE teachers in some counties from Ksh20,000 to Ksh7,836.
The Commission, however, denied the reports and said that the proposed revision would be illegal since it is below the minimum wage of Ksh12,000.
In conclusion, Kipsang’ pleaded with Senators to negotiate with the SRC on behalf of ECDE teachers and ensure that their salaries are not reduced.
He also reiterated the need for the government to invest in quality education by providing adequate compensation to educators.
