Machogu Calls for Harmonized Govt Scholarships to Reach Vulnerable Students
Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu has called on county and national government officials to collaborate in distributing scholarships to ensure that the most vulnerable students are reached.
During the launch of the Elimu na Simba scholarship program, which will support 500 needy secondary school students, Machogu highlighted that both levels of government have various scholarships that require common selection criteria.
This would guarantee that needy students are not disadvantaged and that every student who requires support receives it.
The CS was touring education programmes in Kisii when he noted that some learners had not reported to school due to lack of school fees. He commended the county government for supporting students who scored 350 marks and above in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.
He also challenged local Members of Parliament to support remaining students who have not received any form of assistance, reminding them that they receive development funds, of which 35 percent is allocated to bursaries.
Machogu promised to support 20 students from poor families through a partnership with the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), and the scholarship will cover school fees and other school requirements.
Kisii Governor, Simba Arati, noted that the Elimu na Simba scholarship program is an initiative of the Office of the First Lady and is sponsored by well-wishers who want to support needy students from poor backgrounds.
Arati pointed out that education is an important equalizer that enables poor families to scale social, economic, political, and leadership ladders.
He emphasized that the Elimu na Simba scholarship program will help to bridge the gap and complement what other benefactors and government institutions are doing to support more needy students from Kisii County.
He said the students who have received the scholarship will be fully sponsored from Form One to Form Four and urged residents to report cases of any student who scored 350 marks and above but are unable to join Form One.
The County Boss noted that they have done a supplementary budget that, once approved, will enable the county to disburse Ksh. 135 million for bursaries, and each ward will receive Ksh. 3 million through the MCAs.
In addition, Arati said they are working jointly with National Government Administration Officials right from the village level to help in identifying and validating the needy cases, for action.
He challenged the benefiting students to work diligently and post impressive academic performance, as this is the only way that they can realize the value of the sponsorship.
