Elgeyo Marakwet Disburse Sh.53 Million Bursary Funds For 4,300 Students
The Elgeyo Marakwet administration has disbursed Sh. 53 million bursary funds to benefit approximately 4,300 students from humble backgrounds.
These funds have been allocated to secondary schools, technical and vocational training colleges, and universities.
Governor Wisley Rotich announced that the committee also considered the children of Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) personnel, specifically over 100 children who have been orphaned by banditry or are living with disabilities.
Governor Rotich emphasized that the process was transparent and the list of beneficiaries came from public vetting at the sub-location level in all the wards of the county.
He added that education is the quickest way out of poverty and that by supporting needy students, they are being given a stepping-stone to a better life. He stated that investing in young people is crucial for community growth.
Furthermore, the county is forming a revolving education fund to assist learners who wish to pursue their education abroad, particularly those who want to study medicine. The fund will be similar to the HELB loan scheme.
The county government is also seeking more scholarships from other organizations, and they have already given out 109 scholarships through the Imara program with World Vision.
In addition, the Tujiajiri program has been implemented, which provides participants with tools to start business ventures or work, reducing joblessness.
Governor Rotich noted that the girl child is often lost through early pregnancies, and he called for the arrest of culpable parents and residents to be publicly shamed in the community. He added that losing a child also means losing the money that had been invested in their education.
By investing in education and providing scholarships and bursaries, they hope to alleviate poverty and empower young people to build better lives for themselves and their communities.
