KUPPET, KNUT Lashed Out Over Dishonesty On CBC Stand
Nelson Havi, the former president of the Kenyan Law Society, has criticized KNUT and KUPPET for their recent stance on the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Havi characterized teacher union leaders as dishonest, stating they have abandoned their former position of supporting the curriculum.
In a dispute brought by a parent, Esther Ang’awa, in which Havi served as her attorney, the former head of LSK stated that two unions produced statements supporting the CBC.
According to Havi, KNUT and KUPPET representatives filed affidavits supporting CBC in court.
“Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) officials are a dishonest lot.
"They filed Affidavits in Court supporting CBC. Today they are shouting loud that CBC is not viable and should be scrapped. Can they concede in Court?”
In the 2021 lawsuit, Havi alleged that CBC violated the Basic Education Act and the Constitution by disrupting the fundamental foundation of the nation’s education system.
However, KUPPET secretary general Akelo Misori stated that the curriculum was consistent with Articles 53 and 43 of the Constitution (1).
He noted that the system was adaptable and well-coordinated, stating that it would give the students endless chances.
Misori stated further that the system could not be eliminated because the government was planning to build over 10,000 classrooms under the program.

Havi’s words are made notwithstanding disagreements among education leaders and parents on the future of the CBC.
Misori supported President William Ruto’s move to examine the curriculum on Friday.
Collins Oyuu, secretary general of the KNUT, stated that the learners, who are due to enter junior secondary school in January 2023, should be retained in primary school because they are still young.
He stated that the government should avoid wasting money on constructing new classrooms because the students can utilize the existing classrooms in their elementary schools.
Ruto stated his intention to examine the curriculum on Tuesday.
He stated that he will establish an Education Reform Task to aid in the evaluation.

In accordance with the constitutional mandate for public engagement, it will gather the opinions of all major stakeholders.
Ruto noted that he was aware of the concerns of parents whose children are making the transition from the 8-4-4 system to the CBC system.
“I am aware of the anxieties on the twin transitions of the last 8-4-4 class and the first CBC class in January next year. I assure you there will be a solution to the matter before then.”
