Kenya Secures 11,000 Opportunities for Workers and Students in UK; Who Qualifies
On Wednesday, March 15, the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua met with a United Kingdom Commonwealth delegation in London to discuss opportunities for Kenyans seeking to work in the UK.
In a statement released by the Foreign Affairs CS, the government sought to secure opportunities for Kenyans to work in the UK in various sectors.
The statement indicated that the government sought slots for 2,000 Kenyan nurses, 1,000 seasonal agricultural workers, and 8,000 seasonal jobs in construction, hospitality, and health in the Isle of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
Additionally, the Foreign Affairs CS requested the UK delegation, led by James Cleverly, to increase the scholarship slots to Kenya from the current 40 Chevening and 20 Commonwealth to 80 and 40 respectively.
The delegation discussed issues of mutual interest and emphasized the importance of peace and stability, given that events in one region can affect other unrelated regions.
During the meeting, the delegation also discussed matters of regional peace and security, exploring ways to end the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan.
The UK delegation appreciated Kenya’s commitment to improving peace, security, and prosperity in the region. The meeting also provided an opportunity for the UK and Kenya to update each other on ongoing projects and agreements signed during previous meetings.
Furthermore, Kenya was among 24 African countries picked to attend the United Kingdom – African Investment Summit scheduled for April 24-25, 2024.
The conference aims to enhance economic partnerships between the UK and Africa, create jobs, and promote British and African talent in sectors such as finance and technology.
The other countries picked to attend the conference were Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, and Nigeria.
The meeting between the Foreign Affairs CS and the UK delegation highlights the growing partnership between the two countries.
The UK is an important trading partner for Kenya, and there have been efforts to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
For instance, during his visit to Kenya in February 2022, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly announced a £132 million investment in the UK-Kenya Partnership for Prosperity, aimed at boosting trade and development.
The opportunities presented during the meeting between the Foreign Affairs CS and the UK delegation will provide Kenyans with access to employment and educational opportunities in the UK.
The slots for 2,000 Kenyan nurses, 1,000 seasonal agricultural workers, and 8,000 seasonal jobs in construction, hospitality, and health will provide Kenyans with opportunities to gain valuable skills and experience while contributing to the UK economy.
