KCSE Candidate Dies After 7-Year Battle With Leukemia, Days To Exam

St. Peters Gathuthi-ini day mixed secondary school, located in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, was beset by tragedy when a candidate passed away just four days prior to the commencement of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
As per a family member headed by Millicent Wambui, Clement Kariuki passed away en route to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment on Thursday.

According to Wambui, the student has been in her guardianship since the death of his mother when he was in sixth grade.

Plement Kariuki had been afflicted with leukemia for the previous quarter-century. “The condition had caused him to miss school intermittently,” Wambui explained.

Jonathan Gathure, the uncle of Kariuki, was hopeful that his nephew would attend the examination and perform at his best.

“It is sad that he has died before sitting his exams. He has left very huge hospital bills,” Gathure said.

Approximately 13,567 candidates have registered for the KCSE examinations that began today in Kirinyaga County, as reported by TSC Deputy Director Isabella Iregi.
