It has come to light that commencing next year, candidates registering for KCSE exams will await their results before deciding which universities and colleges to attend.

Subsequent to the prohibition by the Ministry of Education of candidates applying for university places while still in school, this practice has ceased.

Students will have to exercise their independence in selecting institutions subsequent to the completion of their KCSE examinations, in accordance with the new funding framework for tertiary education.

Basic Education PS Bellio Kipsang states that, due to the implementation of a new funding model, applicants will consider program costs per the information available in the KUCCPS online application system when making their choices.

Kipsang explains in a circular dated October 27 that the decision is due to the modification to the funding formula.

The decision will affect more than four million secondary school students under the 8-4-4 education system.

This information will assist applicants and their parents or custodians in making informed decisions. The government will therefore ban applications in centers and schools in the future.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and the Regional Directors of Education are copied on the circular, which is addressed to the County Directors of Education.

Through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal, the application was done.

The circular states, “Therefore, KUCCPS wishes to inform the schools that applications for placement to universities and colleges will commence following the declaration of programs, capacities, and program costs by training institutions and the release of KCSE Examination results.”

Kipsang urged KUCCPS to continue advising students on their potential careers and to assist them in selecting courses that correspond with their desired professions while they are still in school.

In addition, the ministry will strengthen career guidance teachers’ capacity building to enable them to assist students with placement applications.”

The discontinued approach required students to select from eighteen potential areas of study.

There are six degree course options, four diploma program options, and an equivalent number of craft certificate option options among these. There are four additional alternatives available for certificate courses in artisanship.

In pursuit of degrees, applicants will provide a prioritized list of their four preferred courses. Option one consists of three available spaces for the identical program, each at a distinct university.
