Indimuli Kahi’s Final Message to Teachers as KESHA Chairman
Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA), who has led the association for eight years, gave his farewell address at the 46th annual Kenya Secondary School Headteacher’s conference in Mombasa.
“This is my last speech as the association’s chairman. I will start handing over to my vice chairman Boniface Karisa before retiring at the end of this year so that he can start mastering the job,” he said.
Indimuli asked principals to take a more forgiving approach to student discipline.
The Children’s Act protects children from various forms of discipline that can get them into trouble, therefore Indimuli warned the principals to avoid using corporal punishment.
As a result, he urged principals to familiarize themselves with the legislation, lamenting the fact that teachers were often the victims when students reported incidents to their parents.
Indimuli Kahi remarked that teachers should abide by the provisions established in the corporal punishment act during a speech .
I’d like to implore everyone to exercise extreme caution when discussing the topic of physical punishment. We’re trying to get rules made to make the Children’s Education Act’s provisions for students actually work,” Indimuli remarked.
A parent’s complaint to the teachers hiring board about the punishment of a student led to the suspension and interdiction of three teachers at Indimuli’s school, he said.
He explained that the teachers had been interdicted and suspended after a parent had filed a false report with the Texas State Commission (TSC).
The KESSHA head also mentioned that the legislation was leading to greater punishments for teachers, therefore it was important for them to become familiar with the law.
In addition, he urged parents to fulfill their legal obligation by handing over their children to educators as per the law.
