Grade 1 Pupil Who Died In A House Fire Laid To Rest in Bungoma
A young girl named Catherine Nafula Nyongesa, who was a grade one pupil at Bungoma DEB Primary School, tragically lost her life in a fire at her friend’s place in Kanduyi Constituency, Kenya.
Catherine, who was just a few days short of her sixth birthday, had gone to play with her friends near her home in the morning and had requested to spend the night at her friend’s place, as was her usual routine.
According to Catherine’s mother, Christine Nyongesa, the fire broke out in the room where Catherine was staying at around 9 pm.
Despite efforts by neighbors to save her, the flames spread quickly and Catherine was unable to escape. Her body was burnt beyond recognition, and she passed away before the fire could be extinguished.
Catherine’s mother, in her eulogy, described her daughter as not just a daughter, but also a friend, secret keeper, confidant, and fashionista. The local Member of County Assembly (MCA), Anthony Lusenaka, offered his condolences to the Nyongesa family, expressing that no parent should have to go through such a tragic loss.
Catherine was remembered by her class teacher, Madam Tabitha Oguda, as an active pupil in class. She had been a grade one student at Bungoma DEB Primary School until her untimely death on April 7, 2023. The community mourned the loss of this young life, as Catherine was laid to rest at her home in Mashambani.
The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and the need for vigilance in preventing such accidents. The Nyongesa family and the community are left grieving the loss of Catherine, a young girl who had her whole life ahead of her.
