Govt Plan to Introduce Green Conduct Certificates for Jobs & Services.
The administration of President William Ruto is considering the introduction of the Certificate of Green Conduct to supplement existing standards for job applications and access to government services.
Soipan Tuya, Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Forestry, stated on Thursday, December 8, during the launch of the Kusi Festival that the certificate will be crucial in helping the government realize its greening initiative and combat climate change.
Tuya defended the decision to launch the Certificate of Green Conduct by stating that it will assist the nation in planting over 15 million trees to combat climate change.
“It would get to a point where we would ask Kenyans to plant their 300 trees within the 10 years period even have an opportunity to award Kenyans with a certificate of green conduct where we can attach it at the value of credentials that you require to access services and jobs in this country,” Tuya stated.
The prerequisite for earning the certificate would be the planting of more than 300 trees that can be accounted for by the government during a ten-year period.
Tuya added, “We are rolling out an extremely ambitious programme to green our country. It is in the spirit capitalising on nature-based solutions which is what we can do best.”
“15 billion trees like a mind-boggling figure, but if you break it down, it’s only 300 per Kenyan for ten years,” she added.
Tuya did not specify when the Certificate of Green Conduct will be implemented or which employment and government services will necessitate it.
If implemented, this certification will be added to the list of those required for job applications and access to government services.
Some Kenyans are currently obliged to submit a Certificate of Good Conduct issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) with their employment applications.
Higher Educations Loans Board (HELB) also provides university student credit recipients with a clearing certificate.
During the administration of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, the government issued the Huduma Namba card. It was advertised as facilitating service access.
The Huduma Namba card was intended to replace the national ID card. Nonetheless, a judge ruled that the card was unconstitutional.
