Families of Mukumu Girls’ Victims to Get Ksh.400k Compensation Each
In a tragic incident at Mukumu Girls High School, several students lost their lives due to food poisoning.
However, the government has stepped in to offer some solace to the grieving parents.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu recently announced that each parent would receive a compensation of Ksh.400,000 from the government.
This compassionate move aims to alleviate some of the financial burden that the affected families have had to endure.
The government has set aside a total of Ksh.1.2 million to compensate the parents of the three students who tragically perished at the school.
Although the incident has raised concerns about the school’s management and responsibility, Machogu made it clear that no criminal charges would be filed against the former school principal, Fridah Ndolo, or the school administration.
The government’s decision was based on the findings of a multi-agency team that thoroughly investigated the matter.
The team concluded that there was no criminal culpability on the part of the school administration.
While addressing the Senate, Machogu emphasized that no evidence had been found to suggest that the principal was involved in supplying the food that led to the poisoning.
Consequently, the government granted her a temporary assignment at the provincial director’s office until her retirement in December.
The incident at Mukumu Girls High School has sparked concerns among legislators regarding the enforcement of safety guidelines and measures in schools.
Majority Leader Aaron Cheruyot questioned why such a tragedy occurred despite the presence of manuals and guidelines.
‘’A life of a student is one too many already and it should gather the collective rage of the ministry of education and all those responsible, if those guidelines were in place what caused the breach that led to the deaths, and what measures has the ministry put in place to ensure that we don’t lose a life of any other student?’’ posed majority leader Aaron Cheruyot.
He called for a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding the incident and sought assurances that measures would be put in place to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents in the future.
Machogu acknowledged the concerns raised by the senators and highlighted the importance of enforcing guidelines effectively.
He admitted that there had been a weakness in ensuring compliance with the guidelines issued by the ministry.
