Equity Bank to Sponsor 1,000 Financially Disadvantaged 2022 KCPE Students
Equity Bank announced that it will fund the high school studies of 1,000 bright but economically challenged students who sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2022.
On Monday, January 23, the Executive Chairman of the Equity Group Foundation, Dr. James Mwangi, congratulated the selected students on receiving very competitive scholarships.
Dr. Mwangi reaffirmed that the Wings to Fly program aims to improve the lives of Kenyans by empowering the country’s brightest brains.
“We remain optimistic that at the end of the four-year period, they will come back as winners. Our hope is that this program, as it also offers mentorship and coaching will equip them with the right tools to be transformational leaders in society,” he stated.
Jane Mbugua, Deputy Director and Project Coordinator for the Ministry of Education, applauded Equity Group’s great deed after reading a message from Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
“The support given by Equity Group and its partners is a boost to the government’s 100 per cent transition to secondary schools. I commend Equity for being a true partner to the government in furthering the socio-economic development agenda of the people of Kenya.
"We are aware of the tremendous impact of programs such as Wings to Fly. With proper resourcing of education, we can support needy families, uplift the society and avoid school dropout.” Mbugua stated.
Ambassador of Germany to Kenya Sebastian Groth praised the two institutions for providing life-altering opportunities to the 2022 KCPE top performers.
Groth stated, "As the German Development Agency continues to cooperate with Equity Group to give these scholarships annually, it is our goal that these facilities will serve as a source of motivation for the scholars to become outstanding leaders in their communities and society.”
Prior to the formal program of the thirteenth cohort, all recipients gathered at the Pangani Girls High School for their introduction training.
Julius Chacha Mwita, who earned the second-highest score (429) in the national exam, is among those who profited from the program.Mwita stated that his mother, an Isibania market vendor, could not afford to pay his school fees. He was called to the Kabsabet High School.
“Most successful people have a painful story to tell and every painful story has an ending, I aspire to become a doctor and I believe that with the Wings to Fly scholarship, I will achieve this,” he stated.
The Wings to Fly scholarships are supported by a cooperation between Equity Group and the German Development Agency, KfW.
It includes four years of complete tuition, a thorough mentorship program, a back-to-school basket, psychosocial wrap-around assistance, and medical care while in school.The scholars will enter the Equity Leaders Programme after graduating from high school and gaining admission to universities (ELP).
Community Scholarship Selection Boards (CSSBs) conduct in-person interviews and home visits prior to granting scholarships to the most meritorious students.
In addition to monitoring students’ academic success, the CSSB is concerned with their general welfare.
