The Government will continue to implement reforms in the education sector, according to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who claims that these reforms are intended to raise the sector’s standards.

Gachagua stated on Sunday, during the 41st commencement ceremony at the University of Eastern African Baraton in Nandi County, that the reforms recommended by the Presidential Working Group on Education Reforms will assist in reengineering the sector.

He stated that the report has initiated a series of reforms that are poised to reshape the education system, aligning it with the evolving socio-economic development needs of the nation.

According to Gachagua, President William Ruto established the taskforce to seek inclusive and evidence-based reforms in the Education Sector in an effort to redirect and retrain graduates from job seeking to job creation.

While supporting the proposed new funding for university students, the Democratic Party emphasized the need to refocus financial aid on those in dire need.

He stated that they were in the process of revising the university education funding model with the aim of enhancing its effectiveness.

Gachagua expressed the intention to ensure that students requiring financial assistance would receive comprehensive support. He further mentioned that their efforts were directed towards improving the approach to funding education.

The DP stated that the Kenya Kwanza Administration will continue to allocate funds to improve the quality of education in schools.

In the first budget of the administration (2023–24), the government allocated Sh628 billion to the sector, an increase of more than Sh84 billion from the previous year.

He stated that the government is introducing and initiating a skill-focused system aimed at development. It was mentioned that Kenya Kwanza’s approach is shifting away from producing graduates who need on-the-job learning.

Instead, they are aiming to produce individuals who are fully equipped and skilled, aligning with the goal of bolstering the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.

Gachagua stated that church-affiliated institutions, such as Baraton, had contributed to the nation’s development, and he pledged to strengthen the partnership with them.

“As a government, we value the contribution of the church to education and health. “They have done an outstanding job of improving the lives of the people,” he said.

As a graduate who had worked his way up from the bottom, the Deputy President also provided morsels of insight.

“As you depart this institution, remain focused and ambitious. Nobody should prevent you from pursuing your dreams. Every dream is legitimate. “Never allow anyone to discourage you from pursuing your dreams,” he advised the graduates.

In addition, he challenged the graduates to investigate opportunities such as the government’s paid apprenticeships to integrate academic skills with job market demands.

Prof. Philip Maiyo, vice-chancellor of the university, praised the DP for expressing the truth and for being an inspiration to the youth.

Prof. Maiyo praised Gachagua’s reputation for candidness, noting that it has earned him significant favor among Kenyans. The professor further acknowledged Gachagua’s achievements as a substantial source of inspiration for the youth, highlighting its value as an example to follow.

In addressing Gachagua, Prof. Maiyo emphasized the sense of pride that the younger generation takes in him. Additionally, he highlighted that Gachagua’s leadership qualities have earned the admiration of the older generation.
