On May 6th, Kabarak University reported that their official Facebook account had been compromised by a group of cybercriminals.

In a statement released by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, it was stated that the criminals were using the page to spread malicious and misleading information and images that were contrary to the Biblical Christian values of Kabarak University.

The university assured stakeholders and the general public that necessary measures were being undertaken to take action against the perpetrators.

The statement also urged followers and prospective students to disregard any information posted by these criminals and to contact the university directly through their official website or other verified channels.

Kabarak University had surrendered the page to the scammer and had subsequently created another page.

The university promised that action would be taken against the hacker as they would not give in to their demands. As a result, the ICT manager was suspended until further notice.

The hacker had demanded Ksh68,250 (500 dollars) for the university to regain its account. However, the hacker refused to return the account, stating that they were a student from one of Jakarta’s IT-based high schools in Indonesia and challenged the university to reclaim the account.

The hacked Facebook account was verified and had 46,000 followers and 36,000 likes. The situation caused significant disruption to the university’s online presence through their Facebook page, and the university apologized for any inconvenience caused.

The university affirmed that they would heighten their cyber security measures to prevent further breaches. They also dissociated themselves from any information or advertisements posted on their Facebook page by the criminals.
