CBC Contractors Call For Payment Review
Contractors constructing classrooms for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) want the government to enhance their pay through the Ministry of Education due to the region’s difficult terrain and the high cost of materials.
The Marakwet West Sub County contractors now want their remuneration per classroom boosted to one million shillings from the existing rate of 788 thousand, claiming that the present rate causes them to lose money.
Some have withdrawn from the second phase of building, citing losses, while others have not been paid for the first phase.
Benjamin Kimeli Rotich, a contractor, told KNA that the estimates provided by the government for the Marakwet region are too low and should be updated significantly.
He stated that despite having contracts, some contractors were compelled to abandon projects because they could not withstand losses.
They want the price to be increased, stating that not only is the terrain difficult, but the cost of materials has also grown, adding that the high costs of sand, cement, roofing sheets, and labor have become an issue for them.
The project’s first phase is complete, and the second is currently underway.
Director of Education for the Marakwet West Sub-County, Julius Ngoneshi, indicated that the problem of expense review had been highlighted and that the ministry was investigating the subject.
He stated that while the government investigates the matter, the contractors had already agreed to the pricing when they signed the contract agreements.
He noted that the withdrawn contracts were awarded to other companies with the competence to complete them.
He stated that all contractors would be paid, but they should be patient.
