Students from Kapindasum Primary School have described a harrowing two-hour attack on their school by cattle rustlers just before the national exams.

A video that surfaced online on Thursday shows the students lying on the classroom floor. Multiple rounds of gunfire could be heard during the attack.

Catherine Chepchumba, one of the students, revealed that they had no choice but to take refuge in the classrooms out of fear that the bandits might open fire on them.

She expressed deep concern for their safety and mentioned that they had gone without food for most of the day during the attack.

Catherine, an eighth-grade student, made a heartfelt plea to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, urging him to intervene by deploying additional police reinforcements to protect the school and the surrounding area.

Kapindasum Primary School also accommodates the Junior Secondary School, and some of the students are preparing to sit for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

“We are extremely frightened, and we implore the CS to step in. It’s already 9 am, and we haven’t had anything to eat. We are so scared, and you can even hear the gunshots right now. We are on the brink of taking our exams, and we don’t know what to do,” she expressed.

On the other hand, a teacher explained that it took a while to neutralize the attack because the bandits had encircled the nearby General Service Unit (GSU) camp, preventing the officers from responding promptly to the school’s distress call.

Nevertheless, the teacher mentioned that a few officers were present at the school during the attack and attempted to repel the bandits.

The teacher reported that the attack occurred at approximately 9:12 a.m. During a patrol, some GSU officers encountered the bandits just one kilometer from the school and subsequently sought refuge at the school.

The teacher also noted that the officers requested additional support, but the bandits had already encircled the GSU camp. The students, filled with fear, had not even taken their seats. The school had nearly 207 students who were preparing to take the national examinations.

The national exams will begin officially on October 30.
